Iowa’s Real Snow Load, County by County
Adopted code: 2015 ICC model codes (Iowa Code 103A.8C / Chapter 315), statewide — Referenced ASCE edition: ASCE 7-10
Iowa carries genuine, statewide moderate snow load — with a real, elevated band along the Minnesota border:
| Region | Ground Snow Load |
|---|---|
| Cerro Gordo, Dickinson, Emmet, Floyd, Hancock, Howard, Kossuth, Lyon, Mitchell, Osceola, Winnebago & Worth counties (northern border, highest in Iowa) | 40 psf |
| Most of Iowa's 70 moderate-classification counties | 21–39 psf |
| 29 light-classification counties | ≤20 psf |
Source: SnowLoadByZip.com county-level ground snow load lookup (ASCE 7-22 basis), queried 2026-09-03. Statewide average 27.3 psf; 29 of 99 counties light, 70 moderate.
Note: Iowa’s currently adopted building code (the 2015 ICC model codes) references ASCE 7-10 — two editions older than the ASCE 7-22 basis above. We re-checked five representative counties directly against ASCE 7-10 and got identical figures to the ASCE 7-22 numbers shown, but that isn’t confirmed for all 99 counties. Your local building department’s adopted figure governs permit approval.
The northern border is the real exception. Twelve counties bordering Minnesota reach 40 psf, Iowa’s maximum mapped figure — a genuine, substantial step above Northcraft’s 35 psf basis.
Most of Iowa stays under our threshold. The remaining 87 counties, including most of the state’s moderate band, sit at or below 35 psf.
Iowa’s Real Agricultural Building Exemption
This is worth saying plainly because it’s true and rarely written about honestly: Iowa Code section 335.2 exempts land and structures that are genuinely “primarily adapted, by reason of nature and area, for use for agricultural purposes, while so used” from county zoning regulation. A farmer building a real agricultural building or grain bin — not a residence, not a business unrelated to the farm operation — can often build without a county zoning permit.
The exemption is about genuine, principal agricultural use, not simply owning farmland. Other permits (floodplain, well, septic, E911 address, driveway access) can still apply, and a proposed dwelling generally must show its occupants are primarily engaged in agriculture to qualify. Confirm your specific project with your county before assuming exempt status.
Separately, Iowa adopted the 2015 ICC model codes as a mandatory statewide baseline under Iowa Code section 103A.8C, administered by the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals — local jurisdictions handle day-to-day plan review, permitting, and inspection for non-exempt construction. Most non-agricultural jurisdictions require a permit, and we provide the stamped engineering drawings that process requires.

What Iowa Builds
Real Farm Buildings — Exempt From County Zoning
Iowa Code section 335.2 exempts land and structures genuinely used for agricultural purposes from county zoning — including from needing a zoning permit for a real farm building or grain bin. Machinery sheds, hay storage, and livestock barns built for actual farm use often qualify.
Northern Iowa — The One Real Snow Exception
Twelve counties along Iowa's Minnesota border — Cerro Gordo, Dickinson, Emmet, Floyd, Hancock, Howard, Kossuth, Lyon, Mitchell, Osceola, Winnebago, and Worth — reach the state's maximum mapped snow figure, 40 psf, a real step above Northcraft's 35 psf basis.
Central & Southern Iowa
Des Moines and the rest of central and southern Iowa carry a lighter, more moderate snow classification, generally staying under Northcraft's 35 psf standard basis.

Frequently Asked Questions
What ground snow load applies to a steel building in Iowa?
Iowa carries a real, statewide-moderate snow load — an ASCE 7-22 average of 27.3 psf, with 70 of Iowa's 99 counties in the 21-40 psf moderate band. Twelve counties along the Minnesota border reach the state's maximum figure, 40 psf: Cerro Gordo, Dickinson, Emmet, Floyd, Hancock, Howard, Kossuth, Lyon, Mitchell, Osceola, Winnebago, and Worth. That's a real, genuine step above Northcraft's 35 psf standard basis, unlike most of the rest of the state.
Are agricultural buildings exempt from permits in Iowa?
Often, yes, and it's a real, codified exemption, not folklore. Iowa Code section 335.2 exempts land and structures that are "primarily adapted, by reason of nature and area, for use for agricultural purposes, while so used" from county zoning regulation — including farmhouses, farm barns, and other farm outbuildings. A qualifying farmer can generally build a genuine agricultural building or grain bin without a county zoning permit. Other permits — floodplain, well, septic, driveway access — can still apply, and the exemption requires that the building's real, principal use is genuinely agricultural, not just located on farmland.
Is there one statewide building code in Iowa?
Iowa adopted the 2015 ICC model codes as a mandatory statewide standard through amendments to Chapter 315, under Iowa Code section 103A.8C, administered by the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals. Local jurisdictions still handle plan review, permitting, and inspection day to day — but the underlying code baseline is set at the state level.
Does the agricultural exemption apply to my building?
It depends on genuinely demonstrating that your land and building are principally used for farming — not simply that the land is zoned agricultural or located outside town limits. If you're building a barndominium or residence rather than a working farm structure, the exemption generally doesn't apply, and standard county review is the real path. Confirm your specific situation with your county's planning and zoning office before assuming exempt status.
What does a steel building cost in Iowa?
Northcraft's published floors start at $10,500 for a 20x24, scaling up in size through 50x100 in I-beam framing, assuming ground snow load up to 35 psf. Most of Iowa clears that basis; the twelve northern-border counties at 40 psf need a real snow-load engineering step-up. Tell us your county and we'll confirm your real number.
Do I need a permit for a steel building in Iowa?
Most jurisdictions require a permit for typical residential, commercial, or non-exempt agricultural construction, issued and inspected locally under Iowa's statewide code baseline. A genuinely agricultural building may qualify for Iowa Code 335.2's zoning exemption — check with your county. We provide the stamped engineering drawings either path requires.
Can I build a machinery shed or grain storage building in Iowa?
Yes — agricultural buildings are one of Northcraft's strongest fits for Iowa, and a genuinely farm-used building may qualify for Iowa Code 335.2's zoning exemption. See our machinery shed and hay storage pages for real span and clearance detail.
How long does delivery take to an Iowa site?
Typically 45-60 days from order to delivery, depending on engineering review and current production volume, plus normal freight time. Your estimator confirms a real date range once your drawings are finalized.
